For the longest time, I was certain that all of my kids would go to college. In fact, I sort of implied that they were required to go. Who am I kidding? I flat out told them that they were going to college and that they had no choice in the matter! 

Yet, I have always said that homeschooling allows me to customize learning for each of my children.

Especially my twins!!

But, am I really customizing their learning experience if I’m trying to force-fit each of them into the same mold?

Sometimes you have to refocus and adjust.

And that’s what I’ve been doing.

I now realize that college isn’t always the answer… especially when it comes to one of my 15-year old twin boys.

He loves taking apart broken appliances, electronics, gadgets, etc. In fact, he goes around our neighborhood on bulk trash day collecting items to fix or use the parts for new projects.

He has collected so much “stuff” that our garage reminds me of the Sanford and Son reruns I used to watch as a kid. (Yes, I’m dating myself!)

Yes, he is rebuilding a laptop. And he’s been able to refurbish batteries to power the kiddie dirt bike he found. (Ultimately he wants to motorize his bicycle.) At one point he had three lawnmowers, a dismantled stovetop, two ceiling fans, multiple broken RC cars, and more. Much more.

My garage has become his workstation / collection spot!

But, as I’ve witnessed his tremendous passion for working with electronic and mechanical parts (and I’ve embraced the new cluttered state of our garage) I also realize that college might not be the answer for him.

And, now – I’m okay with that.
