Learn how to avoid summer learning loss (without losing your summer) and grab these FREE summer homeschool deals!

Summer and I have a love / hate relationship – and it’s all about my kids! Don’t get me wrong, I’m thankful for the opportunity to homeschool my children and be their primary teacher.

However, no one in my home is more ready for summer break than me! My kids may disagree, but if you homeschool your kids, you know – homeschooling is not easy!

Frankly, it can be flat-out draining!

So, once we are able to close up the last textbook and I enter the final grades in my favorite online planner, it’s time to celebrate!

But, as much as I love the summertime because I get a break from teaching, I hate the summertime. Why? Summer learning loss!

Summer Learning Loss – Every Educators Enemy

Yep, I hate the summertime because of something called “summer learning loss.” And, yes, it’s a real thing! And, it’s pretty self-explanatory. It’s learning that is lost over the summer months.

Summer learning loss or summer slide, is the loss of academic skills and knowledge over the course of summer vacation in countries that have lengthy breaks in the school year, such as the US and Canada. ~ Wikipedia

And, since I live in the US, that means me! And my kids!

As hard as I work throughout the year to teach them, I definitely do not want them to lose the knowledge they gained all school year simply because I need a break from teaching during the summer.

And, I know they don’t want to waste time relearning material in the fall either.

Our Solution to Summer Learning Loss

Because I value my mental health and I know how crucial summer break is for my sanity, I can’t give it up. And, since backtracking and reteaching material in the fall is not beneficial for me nor my kids, we had to do something!

I had to figure out how to avoid summer learning loss, without losing my much-needed summer at the same time!

Our solution?

It’s simple, actually. We continue learning throughout the summer. I’m definitely not talking about a full school load.

By no means would I consider us year-round homeschoolers (although that does work well for some).

Because, you know – I really, really need my summer break.

What we do is slow things down. We incorporate educational activities (that don’t require much, if anything from me) to keep my kid’s minds fresh throughout the summer.

I provide fun activities to review and reinforce what they learned throughout the school year…without them feeling like it’s actual school work!

These could be educational video games. Reading books. Or even letting them dive deeper into some of their interests through academic summer courses.

Three of my four boys LOVE computer science, so the summer presents the perfect opportunity for extra time for their online coding classes!

The best part is that these types of activities stimulate their brain, but don’t overwork mine!
