As I began to think about our homeschool curriculum plans for the upcoming 2014-2015 year, I realized that I never shared about our 2013-2014 curriculum. So, I decided to do a little recap of last year before I share our plans for the upcoming school year.

2013-2014 Homeschool Curriculum

Last year we continued with My Father’s World and used the Rome to the Reformation package as our base curriculum for my older three kids.  I love that we were able to do so many subjects together as a group! That definitely makes teaching a little easier for me! Here is what worked for us for the 2013-2014 school year:

5th Grade Homeschool Curriculum

Bible: Bible was included in MFW, but we were VERY excited to add Apologia’s What We Believe Bible & Worldview series

Math: Singapore Primary Mathematics 4B-5A

Science: MFW included science (We loved making the human body models using The Body Book! And of course, we enjoyed using Apologia’s Exploring Creation text to study astronomy.)

Spelling: Spell to Write and Read AND SpellQuizzer

Grammar: Intermediate Language Lessons AND My Wise Grammar (goes along with SWR)

Writing: The writing curriculum included with MFW did NOT work for us well the year before. So, we switched to WriteShop Junior! I/we are so thrilled about the switch!

Reading: McCall-Crabbs: Standard Test Lessons in Reading along with various other books & read-alouds

Vocabulary: English from the Roots Up (Latin Roots)

History/Geography: MFW includes history/geography. We learned about the Roman civilization, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and the Reformation!

Arts & Crafts: Also included in MFW, we used God and the History of Art (I had grand plans of using more See the Light Art DVD lessons (which my kids absolutely love), but with our move some subjects got put on the back-burner…unfortunately, See the Light ended up being one of them.)

Music: We ended up ditching the composer studies in MFW and used Zeezok Music Appreciation instead. It’s very hands-on and interactive, which we all love! My daughter continued with piano lessons and started voice and guitar lessons. (She’s a HUGE Jamie Grace fan!)

Typing: Typing Instructor for Kids 4

Spanish: Sonrisas Spanish School

3rd Grade Homeschool Curriculum

Bible: See above

Math: Singapore Primary Mathematics 2B-3A

Science: See above

Spelling: See above, plus various spelling printables

Grammar: Primary Language Lessons (with the Teacher Guide & the PLL Workbook) AND My Wise Grammar (goes along with SWR)

Reading: See above

Vocabulary: See above

Copywork: My MFW Printables (I will be sharing these soon!)

History/Geography: See above

Arts & Crafts: See above

Music: See above. Plus, piano lessons

Typing: See above

Spanish: See above

1st Grade Homeschool Curriculum

Bible: included in MFW 1st Grade curriculum.

Math: Singapore Primary Mathematics 1A-1B

Science: Science was integrated into the MFW Kinder curriculum using some awesome Usborne books:

  • Science with Water
  • Science with Plants
  • Things Outdoors

Handwriting: Cursive First (It worked again!)

Copywork: MFW 1st Grade printables

Spelling: Spell to Write and Read AND various spelling printables

Arts & Crafts: Crafts were all integrated into the lessons

Music: Piano lessons

Spanish: See above

Well, that wraps up our 2013-2014 homeschool curriculum recap. Be on the look out for our upcoming 2014-2015 curriculum plans! In the meantime, feel free to check out more past years’ curriculum choices.

I am interested in hearing more about the Cursive 1st program you used last year. My son completed MFWK last yr and this past yr we have been using KONOS Unit Studies but this coming yr (2015-2016) We are going to do MFW1st. He hates handwriting. He can form the letters ok but he acts as though it is such a labor to do it. I dont have too much problem getting him to write doing math but at times if it seems like there are alot of problems we will do it orally. He will be 6 in October. THanks for any advice you may have!

Hi Kelley! We only used Cursive 1st, so I can’t really compare it to any other program. With that said, all five of my children successfully learned cursive using the program. The program teaches cursive using a clockface. Perhaps if he likes math, the use of the clockface may spark an interest in handwriting!
