Rock week was lots of fun for KJ…particularly because she got to make a volcano. I must admit, I had been looking forward to this little activity too! Here is our erupting volcano!

This is what it looked like before all our lava began to flow!

The volcano itself is made of modeling clay or playdough (I can’t remember which we used). We hollowed out a hole in the center and added two tablespoons of baking soda inside. We tinted some vinegar red and then poured it into the hold onto the baking soda and the eruption began!

We made a lapbook for this My Father’s World unit as well. But, sorry no pics this time.  🙁  We got a few printables from Homeschool Share and I found this fun color by number volcano (you have to scroll down the page a bit and then click on volcano) that KJ enjoyed doing.

We also talked about making predictions. KJ predicted whether or not a rock would float and we made predictions about other various objects. Afterwards, we tested out our predictions.

One of our fave books during rock week was Stone Soup.We wanted to make stone soup, but we didn’t get around to it. Bummer!!!! Our other fave book this week was Elizabeti’s Doll. KJ LOVED this book and wanted to have a rock daughter as well! You can read my review of this book here.

Our words to remember were “I listen and obey. I build my life on the Rock.” We talked alot about how God is our Rock and how we should build our life on Him and we did a really fun hands-on project to illustrate this. You can check it out here. Plus, we watched some God Rocks! episodes/videos and listened to our God Rocks! CD. My kids LOVE God Rocks! You can heck out the God Rocks that we made here!

Finally, I caught a few pics of KJ using the math manipulatives that I found for her at the Goodwill. I was able to pick them up super cheap and they have been a GREAT GW find for us! The set came with learning links and activity cards to go along with the links. KJ loves using them and I am coming up with lots of fun ways to use the links in our homeschool!

Well, those were some of the highlights from our week learning about rocks. As always we read lots of books. Here are some that we read during rock week:

I’m eagerly looking forward to getting to it as well. What could be totally fun is if you had a lava rock to try the sink/float experiment with and then totally freak her out since they usually float.
Oh, and I was going to use “Stone Soup” with vegetables, so you get another chance to try and make stone soup. That and we’re going to read “Tumbleweed Stew,” which is super cute.
