Welcome to Day 1 of 10 Days of Math Games & Activities! For the next ten weekdays I will be sharing lots of fun, hands-on math games and activities to utilize with your children or students! Today’s game, Making Equations, is all about addition and subtraction. The game provides a fun way to reinforce and practice basic addition and subtraction skills.
How to Prepare the Game: Print the 4 sets of 1-12 number cards included in the file onto cardstock. (There are two versions to choose from: black ink or gray ink.) Cut and laminate for durability. Print one Making Equations game board for each player. Laminate or slide into a page protector for durability.
How to Play the Game: Shuffle all the cards and deal 3 cards to each player. (The kids love using our homemade card holders to keep all the cards in their hands!) Place the deck of cards face down. Take turns drawing a card from the deck until you are able to make a complete addition or subtraction equation.
Once you are able to make an equation, put the cards in the appropriate spot on your game board. You cannot remove the cards from the board until you have made both an addition and subtraction equation. (This ensures that there is practice with BOTH addition and subtraction).
Once you have made your two equations, remove the cards, set them aside and continue taking turns turning over cards from the deck until you are able to make another equation. This process {practice} continues until all the cards in the deck have been turned over and there are no more possible equations to be made. The player with the most cards from making equations wins.
