What history buff doesn’t love timelines? But, even if history isn’t your thing, I firmly believe timelines are essential for teaching and learning history. Timelines provide a comprehensive understanding of what happened in the world in relation to other events in history. Timelines are how we connect stories of the world with each other.
They’re how we grasp the what, when, how, and why of events in history by seeing how they tie in with one another. Timelines help us piece together historical events. They not only provide a chronological sequence, but they provide context and insight into the events of a particular time period. For these reasons, I believe teaching history requires the use of timelines!

How I’m Using the Essential Timeline Library
I know, the printable Essential Timeline Library is awesome. But, let’s get down to the nitty-gritty of how I’m using it.
First, I printed the cover on cardstock and laminated it. (Although the file also includes a printable spine for a 3-ring binder style notebook, I prefer to use my binding machine to spiral-bind the timeline pages.)
Next, I printed the timeline pages on cardstock (for durability) and spiral bound it all together. Don’t worry, the files include detailed printing instructions, even for printing in duplex mode.
Then, I printed the timeline figures on sticker paper. This makes it SO much easier than gluing each figure to the notebook!
Next, cut out the figures and attach them to the notebook. Using the Suggested Placement Guide is totally optional. A Type A personality, I appreciate having the guide! But, I prefer for my kids to determine where they should place each figure based on the dates.
And, that is how we are using the Essential Timeline Library!
Helpful Hints: I printed the notebook pages on cream color cardstock and the timeline figures on white sticker paper so that there would be a contrast. In hindsight, I would have preferred an even darker shade for the timeline pages.
