Growing Grass

Growing grass…nothing too special about that, right? Well, when you use a baking tray and fill it with miniature animals, all of a sudden growing grass becomes VERY exciting and LOTS of fun!

Before it got cold last year, that is exactly what we did! All you need is:

  • a baking pan (or some sort of shallow container)
  • rocks (for drainage)
  • soil
  • grass seed
  • spray bottle filled with water

Directions: Add the rocks to the bottom of the pan or container. Cover the rocks and fill the container with soil. Sprinkle lots of grass seed over the dirt and then cover the seed with a thin layer of soil.

Next, water it…and water it some more…and wait for your grass to begin to grow!

The kids had such a BLAST playing with their grass!

In fact, my daughter enjoyed playing with the grass and animals so much that she used some of the blades of grass and some leaves to “sew” blankets for the animals!

Who knew planting some grass could be so much fun?!?!?

My hubby had the cute idea of talking about perspective and having the little animals in there from the time the seeds are planted and seeing them appear smaller and smaller as the grass grows taller and taller. Can’t wait to try your wonderful idea!! :o)

I love this! We did something similar at preschool, only we planted grass in a series of tyres and the kids use them as little worlds for imaginative play. If you’d like to take a look:

Jenn, you are wonderful! I just found your blog while searching for thumbsucking help. I also have twin boys (age 4) and a little girl (age 20 months). The growing grass project seems really fun. We will have to do this! Thanks.

Fantastic! I bet the kids just loved taking care of their growing science experiment!
We did this with paper cups. I taped the kids pictures on the outside so it looked like they had green hair. The kids had a blast cutting the grass and making different hair styles. I actually had a grass sod planed for our sensory bin for this coming July
