We had SOOOO much fun with this unit. Although the title is Y for Yellow, the general theme was colors! The absolute highlight of this unit was making our edible crayons! Yes, you can really eat these…and we did! You can get instructions on how to make them here.

After we made our crayons, the kids wanted to keep mixing the icing. So they mixed…

and mixed some more…
I sent KJ on a color hunt. We used our same tray from our color nature hunt. I was expecting her go off and find all kinds of things to put in her tray, but the little stinker went and grabbed our linking cubes and quickly came back with this:
You would think that we had done enough with colors in the kitchen, but we also made cut little rainbow cupcakes and a rainbow cake!
This didn’t have to do with eating, but we certainly did it in the kitchen…our color wheel activity using food coloring. Boy is this a HUGE hit! KJ asks to use it almost everyday! You can click here to get the link to download it.

KJ also LOVED using our Crayola Crayon Maker!!  I always hold on to broken crayons, but I had completely forgotten about using them for our crayon maker. (It was a great GW find last year!) Anyhow, she and the rest of the kids enjoyed making scribbles and seeing the different colors of their crayons.

We also made muffin tin crayons. (This was my initial plan for the broken crayons until I remembered our crayon maker!

KJ (and the big boys) also helped sort buttons by color to use in my new ziploc baggie button storage system.
We also made a coffee filter rainbow sun catcher.
We used the Pinkalicious and made a pink collage for our stART project. We also did another stART project using Mouse Paint.

Of course, we completed our lapbook. I think this post already has enough photos, so I will just give the links to the printables that we used in our lapbook:

M&M Candy Color Graphing Chart from AtoZ Teacher Stuff

Primary and Secondary Color Wheel from Donna Young
Rainbow of Colors w/Songs from 1+1+1=1

Finally, here are the books that we used for our unit on colors. We used ALOT!!!

That’s it for Y is for Yellow…and lots of other colors too!!!  🙂

Would you mind sharing how you did the rainbow cake? I’ve seen them around on the web but never stopped to see how to do it. I may try one for my daughter’s b-day.

Wow! I love all the projects you have done with the colors! Awesome job. I’ve had the edible crayons bookmarked for a back to school party this year! Cannot wait.
