Help set your teen up for success in college, career, and life beyond with Mr. D Math’s live, online College and Career Readiness course!

My husband tells a story of him getting an off-campus apartment in college with some of his teammates. This may sound like a step in the direction of adulthood, and it is! However, the part of the story that always strikes me as slightly disheartening is that he had to pay the rent on behalf of all his roommates every single month.

Why? My husband was the only one of his roommates that actually had a checkbook and knew how to write checks. At that time, it was the only way to pay rent. Sure, they reimbursed him for their portion of the rent amount, but I always feel like his roommates were at a disadvantage because they didn’t have the knowledge and skill that they needed in order to “be an adult” and pay their own rent.
