As our children face the cultural “giants” of society, Will They Stand? Ken Ham teaches us how to parent kids to face these giants and STAND! This book is a MUST READ for all Christian parents!
Parenting is not easy. Especially Christian parenting in today’s society. Statistics indicate that anywhere from 50-80% of Christian students walk away from their faith after graduating. This is frightening, especially since two of my kids just graduated high school!
Frankly, the odds are not in my favor. And, that terrifies me. Have I done enough? Am I doing enough? Will all my children still choose to follow Christ when they are no longer under my roof?
Are they ready to face the cultural “giants” of our society – secularism, depravity, immorality, apathy, etc? Will they stand?

I’ve been a fan of Ken Ham since I was first introduced to him at the beginning of our homeschool journey. He is one of the top biblical, apologetics speakers, president of Answers in Genesis, and founder of the Creation Museum and the Ark Encounter.
So, there was no hesitation when I saw his book, Will They Stand from Master Books.
Will they stand? This is the very question I often ask myself.
Will my children be part of the 50-80% who leave the faith? How will they face the cultural giants of the society? Will they stand strong for Christ?
Mr. Ham’s teaching has been an instrumental part of our homeschooling journey and I figured he would have some helpful insight on how to parent kids to face these giants. Perhaps he would provide a simple 5-step plan to ensure my kids continue to follow Christ.
How to Parent Kids Who Will Stand
Much to my surprise, the way to parent kids that will withstand society’s cultural giants is much simpler than a 5-step program – but at the same time, much more intensive.
Mr. Ham poses the following questions: “Knowing that God is the only One who knows everything and who made all things, and believing that the Bible is His Word, what does God say about training children – the methods, the priorities, the nature of children, how to discipline them, etc?”
In blunt English, he rephrases the question: “Why are you having children if you don’t know what God’s Word teaches concerning how to raise them? And therefore, whose methods are you using them? You might know what psychologists, pastors, and your parents say, but do you know what God says in His Word?”
How do we parent kids who will stand and face the giants? The answer is simple.
Our thinking on child training must be built on the Scriptures! The Bible holds the answers, instructions, and guidance needed to parent kids that will stand!
Although the answer is simple, walking this out is much more intensive than any 5-step program.
Mr. Ham clearly presents what the Bible says about parenting – even when the concepts are not popular with the masses. But, I don’t want my kids to be like the masses. I don’t want them to be part of that 50-80%.
So, I soaked in every word on every page. Some of the lessons that stood out to me are below:
The B-I-B-L-E
As parents, we must be serious about teaching our children biblical truth and we must start as early and often as possible. And we must begin from the foundation up; the logical foundation presented in Genesis!
We need to communicate to our kids that the Bible is special – it is God’s inerrant Word.
The image of David and Goliath comes to my mind. David slew the giant with a sling and a rock.
We must equip our children with the “rock” needed to defeat the giants they will face in society.
The “rock” is the Word of God! The Bible must be the authoritative guide for every area of life. It must be our ultimate guide in child training. It contains the instruction we so desperately need to help our children slay the “goliaths” of society!
Role Reversal
“If the family can be destroyed, the Christian fabric in society will ultimately unravel.” There has been a major reversal of the God-given roles of mothers and fathers and it’s leading to our demise in ways I had never imagined.
In most Christian homes, who is most responsible for spiritually training the children? Teaching them how to pray? How to act as a Christian? Who is the spiritual head of the household?
In most cases, it’s the mother.
However, the Bible specifically reveals special roles and responsibilities of fathers. Fathers are to be the spiritual head of the household.
In the chapter titled, Diligent Dads, Mr. Ham references Psalm 78 which repeatedly instructs fathers to teach their children so they won’t forget to teach their children, so they will never forget what God has done and will keep His commandments.
Mr. Ham encourages readers to write down Psalm 78 and even keep it as a bookmark. So, that’s exactly what I did!
And, of course, you can get the bookmark too. There are three different versions to choose from. Scroll further down the page to access the FREE Psalm 78 bookmarks.
But, Mr. Ham doesn’t stop with the biblical instruction for fathers. He provides practical advice on how fathers can become diligent dads.
And it doesn’t just stop with fathers. What is my role as a mother? According to Mr. Ham’s wife, the “most important thing for a mom to focus on is allowing God’s Word to saturate every part of your kids’ thinking. That has to be first and foremost.”
And, as a wife, I must ask: “Am I fulfilling my role as a helpmate to my husband, or am I undermining his role as the spiritual head of our home?”
Wow, yep – that hit close to home. And, I am reminded – when we don’t do things God’s way, there will always be negative consequences!
Condemn Compromise
The temptation to compromise is always there – whether we compromise knowingly or unknowingly. From not accepting every word of God as truth. To assuming that everything that’s “Christian” is safe.
From allowing secular humanism to infiltrate instead of absolute truth. To rejecting God’s Word as the final authority.
From assuming that our children are ready to withstand peer pressure and be the “salt” before they’ve even been filled with the “pure salt” of God’s Word. To accepting the erroneous idea that we’ve got “good kids.”
According to Mr. Ham, compromise produces people who don’t see God’s Word as infallible. And “if the foundation is compromised, total collapse is inevitable.”
We must condemn compromise at all costs. The future generations are depending on us!
What will they say when I die?
Yes, it’s a morbid thought – but we must plan today with the future in mind. “When your days are done, what kind of legacy will live on in those you touched? Most importantly, will the Lord say, “Well done, good and faithful servant” (Matthew 25:21)?”
Leaving a godly legacy should be the goal. One day we will all stand before God and give an account of our days. I want to say without a doubt that I did my very best to raise my kids as the Lord commands.
And, a godly legacy is built on the authority and sufficiency of the Bible. It always comes back to the Scriptures! As it should!
Final Thoughts on Will They Stand
Will They Stand by Ken Ham is “part journal, part tribute, part devotional, and part “how-to.” It convicted me. Encouraged me. Challenged me. And gave me hope.
It revealed an eternal purpose so often lost in day-to-day living. Every child is going to live forever and ever and ever – in either heaven or hell. And, with this at the forefront of my mind, what should my priorities be?
I’ve discovered a renewed sense of my God-given calling as a mom.
I feel better equipped to parent kids who will face the giants presented by our culture and stand firm!
I am so thankful this book is part of the Master Books collection. It’s quite fitting since Master Books provides students with Christian homeschool curriculum for the real world. Yet, they are wiser still to provide “curriculum” for parents as well – to teach us how to parent our children to face the giants of the real world! Thank you, Mr. Ham and Master Books!
While I’ve shared portions of the book that directly impacted me, there is more, much more to dive into – education, discipline, etc.
I encourage every Christian parent to read this book! Your legacy and your child’s future are at stake! Visit Master Books to learn more about Will They Stand.
