I believe children should see themselves reflected in the books they read and the people they learn about.
“Brown Like Me” began with a simple moment that stuck with me. We were living in a predominantly white town, and one day my daughter, peering out the front window, saw her new babysitter walking toward the front door.
She looked at me and said, “Hey, Mommy, she’s brown like me!”
That little comment made me stop and think about how important it is for children to see themselves reflected in the books they read and the people they learn about.
It was the beginning of what would become “Brown Like Me” – a collection of resources highlighting Black history, remarkable African-Americans, and books featuring Black main characters.
