We have lived in Texas for many years. But it wasn’t until I started looking through the new Texas History curriculum from Beautiful Feet Books, that I learned “Six Flags Over Texas” refers to the six different nations that have ruled all or part of Texas throughout history.
The funny thing is that my kids have long since completed our Texas history studies, and somehow I still learned something new just by flipping through the pages of the teacher guide.

As a Texas homeschool mom, I’ve always believed that understanding the history of our state is an important part of raising informed and engaged citizens.

If you’ve followed my homeschool journey for any length of time, you probably know that I love living books.
That’s definitely one of the first things that caught my attention about this literature-based Texas history curriculum.
I can’t begin to say enough about the selected books that come with the curriculum. While I have since seen a few of them at the library, I’m sad to say we did not use ANY of them during our own Texas history studies… because I didn’t know about them!
Clearly, we missed out on a lot of literature-based Texas history learning!
Rather than relying on dry textbooks and endless fact memorization, students learn through engaging stories that bring Texas history to life.
The curriculum covers Native American tribes in Texas, Spanish exploration, the Texas Revolution, the Republic of Texas, statehood, the Civil War, the cattle drive era, and much more.
I love that students are not only learning historical facts but also developing literary analysis skills through the books they read. They encounter characterization, setting, point of view, and other literary elements while learning history.
To me, that’s one of the biggest benefits of a literature-based Texas history homeschool curriculum. Students connect with people and events through stories, making history far more memorable than simply memorizing dates and names.
Texas History Homeschool Curriculum – It’s not JUST Social Studies
One thing that surprised me as I looked through the curriculum was how many subjects are naturally integrated into the lessons.
Yes, students are learning Texas state history, but they’re also learning:
- Geography
- Vocabulary
- Map skills
- Reading comprehension
- Literary analysis
- Research skills
- Writing
- Science
Students identify and map Texas’s four physical regions, learn about rivers and landforms, build historical vocabulary, create timeline connections throughout the year, and much more.
I love curriculum that works across multiple subjects because it helps me make the most of our homeschool day while showing students how different subjects connect to one another.
Hands-On Texas History Curriculum Activities: Recipes, Crafts, and Experiential Learning
As much as I love books, I have always believed that some of the most meaningful learning happens when kids get their hands involved.
This curriculum includes a dedicated “Play” section filled with hands-on Texas history activities that bring learning to life.
Some of my favorites include:
- Making animal track casts
- Baking cornbread
- Making train biscuits
- Cooking enchiladas
- Preparing pemmican
- Making Texas chili
- Building a grass house
- Creating a mission diorama
- Making beeswax candles
- Pressing flowers
- Designing a stampable cattle brand
As I flipped through the lessons, I found myself wishing my kids were still young enough to do these projects.
With my youngest kids just graduating, I’ve found myself doing that a lot – wishing I could go back to the days of us sitting around the kitchen table having fun learning together!
My kids would have absolutely loved these activities!
Texas History Notebook and Mapping Activities for Homeschool Learning
Another feature I really appreciate is the Texas Notebook.
Throughout the year, students define vocabulary words, complete writing assignments, answer questions, draw illustrations, and document what they are learning in the notebook.
At the end of the course, they have a beautiful keepsake that showcases what they’ve learned.
I also love the large Texas map that’s included with the curriculum. Geography becomes much more meaningful when students can actually see the places they’re studying.
As they learn about rivers, cities, regions, and historical events, they not only color and label the features and landmarks, but they can visualize where everything happened.
Flexible Texas History Homeschool Curriculum with Family Learning Approach
One of my favorite sections of the teacher guide is the emphasis on flexibility.
Beautiful Feet Books repeatedly reminds parents that homeschooling should not feel rigid or overwhelming.
While the curriculum includes 65 lessons, which works out to roughly two lessons per week over a school year, families can slow down when a topic sparks interest or move more quickly through areas that need less attention.
I also appreciate the “Explore” sections that encourage deeper learning for older students and the optional “Rabbit Trails” for families who want to dig even deeper by adding even more great literature, living books, and chapter books to their Texas History studies.
As homeschool parents, we all know that flexibility is one of the greatest gifts of homeschooling, and I love seeing that philosophy reflected throughout this curriculum.
Beautiful Artwork in This Texas History Homeschool Curriculum
One thing I wasn’t expecting was how visually appealing the teacher guide would be.
It’s filled with beautiful artwork, photographs, drawings, and paintings that help bring the lessons to life.
I was especially drawn to the watercolor illustrations throughout the guide.
It’s obvious that a great deal of thought went into creating materials that are not only educational but enjoyable to use.
Final Thoughts on This Texas History Homeschool Curriculum
After spending time looking through this curriculum, I keep coming back to the same thought:
I really wish I had this when my kids were younger.
The curriculum includes living books, geography, vocabulary, notebooking, discussions, projects, recipes, field trips, family learning, and more into one organized, flexible, FUN program.
Even though I won’t personally get to use it with my own children, I’ve genuinely enjoyed exploring it and learning from it myself.
