Earn high school foreign language credit from home with Homeschool Spanish Academy ~ the ultimate foreign language solution for us!
When I began homeschooling my children, I knew the importance of them learning a second language, so I starting teaching Spanish to them myself. As they approached middle school, I quickly realized my inadequacy as their Spanish teacher. So, I began to search for another option.
We soon switched to a computer software program for a few years, but it lacked the conversational element. I knew that it would NOT be sufficient for high school level Spanish. So, I was again in search of another option.
Since we lived in a state where homeschoolers could take classes at the public schools, we opted for my daughter to enroll part-time at the high school to take both Spanish 1 and Spanish 2. Although this option provided the conversational engagement I felt was important, it was accompanied with a few drawbacks.
First, my daughter often complained of being bored and talked about how much time was wasted in the class. Secondly, I had to drive my daughter to class. Chauffeuring her back and forth to school for Spanish class unfortunately used up a chunk of the time that I could have spent actually homeschooling my other kids.
We eventually moved to another state with different laws. Again, I was in search of another option for Spanish at the high school level.
After scouring the internet and meticulously researching different programs, I started to see one program rise above the rest! Homeschool Spanish Academy!
What is Homeschool Spanish Academy?
Homeschool Spanish Academy is a foreign language learning program specifically designed for homeschoolers. It allows students to learn interactively and one-on-one with certified native Spanish speaking instructors online via Google Hangouts Meet, all in the comfort of your own home.
Plus, HSA provides the flexibility that most homeschool families desire! With HSA you select the date, time, instructor(s) of your choice, and the frequency of classes so that it can suit your scheduling needs.
With the online portal, parents and students alike can access the coursework, schedule classes, view grading reports and more!
How Does Homeschool Spanish Academy Work?
You may be wondering exactly how does HSA work? It really is quite simple!

- Schedule class sessions – Log in, select an instructor, check their availability, and select your desired date and time
- Take classes online – Connect with the instructor live, online via Google Hangouts Meet and use screen sharing to interact with and learn from the teacher
- Complete the curriculum – Homework is submitted online, quizzes and exams are taken live with the instructor, and grades and progress reports can be viewed in the online portal.
Earn High School Foreign Language Credit
While HSA offers classes for all ages, from preschool to adult, I was most interested in their high school program since my daughter needed to earn high school foreign language credit.
“Designed to be more rigorous than any public high school curriculum, our students are taught not only to master Spanish grammar, but how to apply their knowledge through conversation with their instructors and in everyday life. Our program satisfies the high school foreign language requirement for college admissions and prepares students for a future of speaking Spanish as a second language.” – Homeschool Spanish Academy
In order to obtain high school credit, students should register for the 50 minute classes. Approximately sixty classes will earn one full high school credit. Taking classes twice a week, this would equate to about 30 weeks.
In addition to providing Spanish instruction that earns high school foreign language credit, HSA can also issue transcripts if needed!
Our Experience with Homeschool Spanish Academy
We signed up for a free trial class. I was impressed with how well the instructor was able to assess my daughter’s knowledge of the Spanish language!
In fact, after the assessment, the teacher indicated that my daughter wasn’t quite ready for their Spanish 3 class. Apparently, HSA is indeed “more rigorous” than the public school where my daughter took Spanish 1 and 2.
I left the free trial class a bit discouraged at the news that she wasn’t quite ready to start Spanish 3, but I was pleased because I could tell that HSA would be a wonderful option for continuing to earn high school Spanish credit! Let me explain!
I signed my daughter up and purchased our first set of 50 minute classes. We read through the bios and somehow selected the perfect teacher for my daughter! The best part is that we were able to schedule all of the classes according to our own schedule and needs!
During the first official class, we got to know the teacher a bit and she asked about our goals and learning expectations. I appreciate that HSA allows for tailored learning as fast or as slowly as needed! We discussed a plan for getting my daughter caught up and moving onto Spanish 3.
And, that is exactly what we did. My daughter has been taking classes with Homeschool Spanish Academy since August 2018.
With the help of her amazing teacher, my daughter has gotten caught up and has completed Spanish 3. We purchased more classes and she is currently enrolled in Spanish 4! Her teacher is awesome and I really couldn’t have asked for a better situation!
My daughter is earning her high school foreign language credit from home on OUR time schedule!
That means no more driving to and from the public school for classes.
No more wasted class time because my daughter now gets 100% of her teacher’s attention.
She is speaking Spanish more fluently and confidently!
And, she regularly engages in real conversations with her native Spanish speaking instructor!
Our foreign language problem has finally been solved! There is no need to search for another option, because Homeschool Spanish Academy is the ultimate solution!
