So, when I sat down to watch the DVD (with KJ’s guitar in hand) I was immediately impressed by how Christ-centered Jean’s message was. She often encouraged us to stop and pray and ask God to help us as we learn. She also suggested that we consider our lessons and practice a time of worship!
Once we got into the lessons, I was so surprised at how easy Jean made it look to play the guitar! You can view the first lesson from the DVD below.
Although Jean made it look so easy, I still felt like I was struggling a bit. (FYI: I have no experience with playing the guitar. I used to play the piano, violin, and clarinet…but that was a LONG time ago!) However, she did encouraged us to stop the DVD to work on the chords. Much to my surprise and relief, I discovered that in addition to the regular lessons, she also has practice sessions on the DVD. This is exactly what I needed! She slowed things down and provided extra help with the chords and pitch. How awesome! I love that she does this because a fast learner can just go through the regular lessons and not become bored while a slower learner (like myself) can get extra practice as needed!
In addition to these seven worship songs, Jean teaches ten chords, one new strumming pattern (straight strum as well as thumb strum), and two new picking patterns. The DVD comes with a booklet (written in both English and Spanish.) which includes all of the music taught.
Overall, I was VERY pleased with the DVD! I think it is a wonderful way to take worship guitar lessons in your own home! As an added bonus on her site, she provides free guitar playing tips as well as a chord chart ebook! Plus, she has children’s worship guitar lessons, which I am very interested in!!!
On a semi-side note, a friend of mine noticed the DVD on my desk while we were having our church small group. Before I had watched the DVD, she asked me if I had plans for leading worship for our group. I laughed and quickly said no. However, after having watched the DVD, I feel as though I could help with a song or two…with a little more practice that is! 🙂 Thanks Jean for such a wonderful resource!!! Jenn thanks for this review, headed over to check it out, Our oldest son started guitar at 5, he was the youngest guitar student they took, but after a year he got bored because he didn’t know the songs he was playing, we live in Japan so all the music was music for their children… this seems perfect as he can scoot along at his own pace!!!!

My guitar is setting the the corner, I so need to practice! Looks like a great resource, all the guitar videos at the library are rock music.
