Math Games for Family Game Night

Who says family game night can’t be fun AND educational? Check out these 35+ math-themed games that you can play with your family!

We love having fun family time, especially family game night. While we do have a few go-to games, I occasionally like to make our game time more educational. Sure, there are the usually suspects like Monopoly Deal and LIFE, but did you know there are tons more math-themed games out there? Check out some of them below. They are divided up by math topic to make searching for suitable games easier!

ADDITION / SUBTRACTION Math Games:

Practicing addition and subtraction is way more fun when it is part of a game! With some of these games, your child may not even realize that they are doing math!






 

MULTIPLICATION / DIVISION Math Games:

Have fun multiplying and dividing with these math games. From card games to board games, you’re bound to find the right game to practice multiplication and division.




 

EQUATION Math Games:

Form equations using addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and more with these equation-themed math games. One of my favorite equation-themed games is the 24 Game. When I taught high school math, I would often use this game as a fun activity while we waited for the bell to ring.


 

TIME Math Games:

I don’t know about your kids, but when mine were younger, they could use all the practice telling time that they could get. It’s way more fun telling time in a game format than doing a tell-the-time worksheet! Check out the time-themed math games below.




 

MONEY Math Games:

Making purchases. Making change. Budgeting, etc. Practice counting and managing money with these fun money-themed math games.




 

LOGIC / STRATEGY Math Games:

These games are a bit more advanced and they involve more logic and critical thinking skills. Many of the games are more strategy based. Put your thinking caps on and have fun playing one of these games during your next family game night!

    It can be tough playing board games with younger children. We occasionally have to have conversations about being a gracious winner and an even better loser. Every so often we have to “ban” a player so that everyone else can have fun. Usually the “exiled player” {LOL} comes back with a better attitude and is able to play with the family again!

    LOVE Equate, Set and Quip. I used them in my classroom all the time. Set and Quip are awesome for when there are a few random minutes left in class. Set has an overhead version that is perfect for class play.

    My kids are 5, 3, 1, and newborn. Can you talk about how to start teaching children to play games? Every time we’ve attemped to bring out candyland or something similar it has to be by the 5 yo rules and she has to win or she cries and makes it no fun for anyone. Any suggestions?
