How do you make colored rice? This is the question I got after I posted the little boys rainbow rice project on Totally Tots. So, here is my colored rice recipe tutorial.

Colored Rice Recipe

 Ingredients:

  • dry white rice
  • rubbing alcohol
  • food coloring
  • bowls
  • spoons
  • wax paper

Directions:

  1. Measure out 1 cup of rice and put it into a bowl.
  2. Add 1 tsp of rubbing alcohol to the rice and stir.
  3. Add a few drops of food coloring and stir. Continue adding food coloring until the rice is the color you want.
  4. Put a piece of wax paper on a flat surface and spread the colored rice on it and allow it to dry completely…at least a few hours.Colored Rice
  5. Repeat steps 1-4 for how ever many colors of rice you would like to have!
  6. Have fun using the rice for as many different crafts and art projects as you can come up with!!!

Yeah, I think the rubbing alcohol is helpful in “sealing” in the color and eliminating the stickiness.

The first time I made I only used food coloring. The rice was very sticky and the color rubbed off onto their hands and clothes.

In addition to the rice, we colored bags of star & moon shapes noodles I found on sale for .25. The star noodles worked great with our solar system crafts.

I make mine with vinegar – just incase the tots put it in their mouth – the result is the same and very vibrant in colour! It will last forever when sealed in an air tight container. The rice in these pictures is over a year old!

Ah! I LOVE the rainbow rice, and I seriously love the rainbow post on TT, I don’t know how you think of such cute ideas. You need to write a kids snack cookbook!

I’ve just come across your tutorial. Great idea and so glad you shared how you did it. I was just wondering.. is it essential to use the rubbing alcohol? Would it not work if you just put the food colouring on?
