After homeschooling five children through high school, I’ve become pretty picky about curriculum.

It isn’t enough for me to ask, “Is this academically solid?” I also want to know, “Is this going to make my life easier?“

By the time I reached the high school years, I wasn’t looking for curriculum that required me to piece everything together or constantly wonder what came next.

Between transcripts, dual credit classes, college planning, extracurricular activities, and everyday life, I wanted curriculum that was organized, easy to follow, and encouraged my kids to become more independent.

Before I even started reading the lessons, I could tell the curriculum was designed by someone who understands homeschool families!

The very first thing I noticed was how easy it is to know exactly what’s assigned and when. That may sound like a small detail, but after homeschooling for years, I can tell you it’s not!

There’s no guessing. No wondering if you’re keeping the right pace.

The schedule is already planned out, making it super easy for students to work independently, while parents simply check in throughout the week!

When a curriculum is laid out this clearly, it eliminates a lot of the daily decision-making!

Divided into nine chronological units, the course takes students from the foundations of Western civilization and European exploration all the way through colonization, the American Revolution, the Constitution, the Civil War, the World Wars, and into today’s world.

Each unit (except for the last unit) contains four lessons. Each lesson is divided into five daily exercises, creating a predictable rhythm that students can easily follow.

I also like that the complete curriculum is just two books: the Student Book and the Teacher Guide. That’s it!

I’ve used curriculum with multiple manuals, separate worksheet books, loose papers, and answer keys hiding somewhere else…

This feels refreshingly simple. Everything is right where I expect it to be, which means less time organizing materials and more time actually homeschooling.

Even the Teacher Guide is thoughtfully designed. It’s pre-punched with three holes, so if you prefer putting the worksheets into a binder, it’s already done for you.

It’s a small detail, but sometimes it’s those details that save a homeschool mom’s sanity!

A Christian American History Curriculum Rooted in a Biblical Worldview

One of the things I appreciate about Master Books is that they don’t ask parents to choose between strong academics and a strong biblical worldview.

History isn’t simply a list of dates, wars, and presidents. It’s the story of people – and ultimately God’s hand at work through history.

That’s the perspective woven throughout One Nation Under God.

Every lesson includes a “Biblical Worldview Analysis” that encourages students to think critically about the events they’re studying through the lens of Scripture.

Rather than simply memorizing facts, students explore how government, culture, economics, and faith influenced America’s development.

I especially appreciate that the curriculum doesn’t ignore difficult topics like slavery or religious persecution. These parts of history are discussed honestly while continually pointing students back to biblical truth.

And I think that’s important!

I don’t want my kids learning history through the lens of politics or popular opinion. I want them to understand that people are flawed, God is faithful, and history makes much more sense when we recognize His sovereignty through it all!

This Master Books High School Course Goes Beyond Memorizing Facts

Another thing that impressed me was the depth of the content.

Yes, students learn the major events every American history course should include. But they also study the worldview of historical figures, explore lesser-known people who helped shape our nation, and spend time reading original historical documents through the “In Their Own Words” sections.

I love that students aren’t simply told what happened. They’re encouraged to interact with speeches, letters, and firsthand accounts so they can better understand the people who actually lived through those events.

And, even though this is a rigorous high school course, it doesn’t feel like a dry textbook. The pages are colorful, visually engaging, and thoughtfully designed, making the material much more inviting for students. Take a peek inside the One Nation Under God Student Book!

The curriculum also includes maps, timelines, biographies, vocabulary support, and cultural development sections that help students connect ideas instead of simply memorizing information.

At the end of every lesson, students review the “Greatest Takeaway in American History”.

I thought that was such a brilliant addition.

History can sometimes feel like an endless list of names and dates. These summaries help students pause and remember the one big idea the author wants them to carry with them before moving on to the next lesson.

For me, that’s another example of how One Nation Under God is intentionally designed to help students truly learn – not just finish an assignment.

I Don’t Have to Do Any Extra Thinking – and That’s a Huge Win

Can I be honest?

By the time I was homeschooling high school, I had already made hundreds of decisions every single week. The last thing I wanted was another curriculum that required me to invent extra assignments or figure out how to help my student dig deeper.

With One Nation Under God, I don’t have to do any extra thinking.

If I want my kids to spend more time on a topic, the ideas are already there.

The Teacher Guide includes optional debates, discussion questions, journal entries, creative writing assignments, hands-on projects, role-playing activities, mapwork, and other enrichment projects – labeled as “Optional: Teacher Discretion.”

That flexibility is great because every student learns differently. Some students love writing. Others learn best through discussion or hands-on activities.

Instead of forcing every family into the same approach, Master Books gives parents options without giving us more work.

To me, that’s a huge win!

High School American History That’s Surprisingly Current

One of the biggest surprises for me was how current this curriculum is.

Many history textbooks stop years, or even decades, before the present. This one doesn’t!

With One Nation Under God students continue their study into the twenty-first century, covering topics like the COVID-19 pandemic, recent presidential elections, the attempted assassination of President Trump, Charlie Kirk’s assassination, and current issues involving women’s sports, an much more!

I really like that history doesn’t feel like something that happened only to previous generations. We are living through history right now.

And I think it’s valuable for our students to learn how today’s events fit into the larger story of our nation – all while evaluating them through a biblical worldview.

Master Books High School Curriculum Designed to Prepare Students for College and Beyond

Designed for students in grades 9–12, the course fulfills one full high school American History credit. It’s also the American history course used in the Master Books 10th-grade package.

What stood out to me wasn’t just the content, though. It’s the way students are expected to engage with that content.

The worksheets in the Teacher Guide include:

• vocabulary work
• comprehension questions
• map activities
• writing assignments
• critical thinking exercises
• discussion questions
• biblical worldview applications
• and more!

Students aren’t simply memorizing information for a quiz, they’re learning to analyze, write, communicate, and think critically.

As a homeschool mom, I love seeing those kinds of skills built into a curriculum because they prepare students for college and for life.

Since the course is designed to encourage independent learning, students can complete most of the work on their own while parents follow up, discuss key ideas, and grade assignments using the included answer key.

And yes, I was happy to see the answer key!

That may not sound exciting, but after years of homeschooling, I’ve learned to appreciate anything that saves me time.

Not having to go back through the lesson and relearn everything before grading assignments is huge! It’s one more way this curriculum lightens a homeschool mom’s workload.

Something stood out more and more as I continued looking through the curriculum.

Although my own children have already graduated, looking through the curriculum reminds me of what I appreciated most during our high school homeschooling years.

By the time my kids reached high school, I wanted curriculum that was academically solid, biblically sound, and easy to implement.

I didn’t want to spend hours figuring out lesson plans, creating extra assignments, or hunting down answer keys.

I had already spent many years pouring into my kids, and I wanted to use those last few years at home encouraging them, nurturing their faith, and preparing them for life after graduation – not managing curriculum.

That’s exactly what I see in Master Books One Nation Under God.

It’s a curriculum that has done the planning for us!

The lessons are organized. The assignments are clear. Optional enrichment is already there if we want it. And the biblical worldview is woven naturally throughout the course.

Instead of spending time trying to figure out what to teach next, parents can spend that time talking with their student, answering questions, and enjoying these final years of homeschooling together.

Because the truth is, those high school years go by incredibly fast! Trust me, I know all too well – I just dropped my youngest off at college a week ago!

I wouldn’t want my final memories as a homeschool mom to be that of me scrambling to keep up with lesson plans.

I would want to remember the conversations, the growth, the milestones, and watching my children become confident young adults who are ready for whatever God has planned for them.
