Homeschool science instruction is made easy and engaging with the online, self-paced science classes from Greg’s Landry’s College Prep Science program.
Self-paced, online science classes and science labs for homeschoolers – did you ever think such a thing was possible? I certainly didn’t! When I think of homeschool science, I think of either me trying to teach my kids all the science I forgot, them trying to teach themselves from a textbook OR them attending a co-op of some sort.
I’ll be honest, when I think of my own experience taking science classes in a traditional school setting, I envision my physics teacher (who slightly resembled Albert Einstein) mixing chemicals together. I recall my biology teacher providing instruction as we performed dissections with our lab partners.
But, what if I told you that similar experiences can be replicated in online, self-paced video instruction? Well, that is exactly what Greg Landry does with his College Prep Science programs.
Although he doesn’t resemble Einstein (like my high school physics teacher), Professor Landry DOES provide high quality, meaningful science instruction while also being engaging, memorable and personable!
About Greg Landry & College Prep Science
Students are taught by Greg Landry, veteran homeschool dad and former college professor. Educating from a Biblical perspective, Landry has taught and mentored several thousand homeschooled students and college students in various capacities over the last 20 years.
Through his signature homeschool science program, College Prep Science, Professor Landry brings all his knowledge and experience to help us homeschool parents provide quality science instruction for our kids!
Through his College Prep Science program, Professor Landry offers a lot of self-paced online science classes to choose from. The current self-paced courses include the following classes:
8th -12th Grade Classes (full school year – two semesters) include:
- Biology
- Chemistry
- Conceptual Physics
- Anatomy & Physiology
7th -12th Grade Classes (one semester) include:
- Exercise & Sports Physiology
- Biochemistry / Microbiology
- Embryology / Endocrinology
- Earth & Space Science
- Study Skills / Measurement / Lab Reports / Graphing
4th – 7th Grade Young Scientist Classes (one semester) include:
- Young Scientist Anatomy & Physiology
- Young Scientist Biology
- Young Scientist Chemistry
- Young Scientist Physics
- Young Scientist Earth & Space Science
We have been checking out the self-paced Young Scientist Anatomy & Physiology class. Each class is about 30 minutes long. As you watch the class, students can both see and hear Professor Landry while he is teaching, writing on the whiteboard, pointing to the graphics, etc.
The class includes an extensive PDF study guide with tons of bright graphics (and black & white versions), which can be printed or used in digital format.
Plus, students have access to Professor Landry through the special, regularly monitored, Inbox function within the student portal. Have a question? He’s just an email away!
Self-paced Classes Provide Flexibility & Freedom
Landry’s self-paced online science classes represent the epitome of flexibility when it comes to online education. Since the classes are online, the student (and parent) can set their learning schedule as needed.
Sick? You can postpone class. Out of town? The online, self-paced classes make it is to take your science instruction on the go!
Is your child struggling with a specific concept? No problem. You’ve got the freedom to pause, rewind, and rewatch the lessons as needed.
Need to slow down the pace (or speed it up)? Landry emphasizes that his no need for a rigidity when it comes to your science schedule!
You’ve got the ultimate freedom and flexibility to make the program work and fit best with you and your child!
Layered Learning Approach to Science
I really appreciate Landry’s layered approach to learning. He emphasizes that exposure without fully mastering or grasping a concept the first time it is presented has great value! Over time as the information has been presented multiple times, the brain will begin to realize that the material is important and will begin to internalize it.
With this approach, Landry is able to present upper level science information to younger children because they are not expected to master it just yet. They are simply being exposed to it so that when they hear it again, they will be somewhat familiar with it until mastery comes naturally with continued exposure.
With that said, Landry does present upper level material in the self-paced Young Scientist Anatomy & Physiology course we have been fortunate enough to have access to. However, since he advocates for flexibility and freedom in education, he reminds parents that they can use as much or as little of the class as they would like, based on what you, as the parent, want your child to know and learn.
This approach is great for both the parent and the child. You nor the child have to feel pressure to cover everything in the lessons because repetition in exposure is key and will come over time!
Critical Thinking & Note-taking Skills Highly Encouraged
Landry focused on building critical thinking skills and developing a research and inquiry mindset. Students learn to create quality lab reports, written versions of the Scientific Method, that reflect what they have learned.
(And, yes, I did print, mat and laminate the Scientific Method page from the College Prep Science Young Scientist study guide pdf file! Love it!)
He believes we should “think critically, deeply, creatively, and biblically.” Hence, the critical thinking skills taught in the classes are so vital that they can be used in every area of academics and life.
In addition to encouraging his students to think critically, deeply, creatively, and biblically, Professor Landry also encourages getting laser focused on the skill of taking notes. He emphasizes that “we remember some of what we hear. But, we remember much more of what we write.”
Hence, being about to take notes well is a much needed skill that he takes time to thoroughly zero in on so that students become highly effective in this area!
Engaging Homeschool Science Instruction
Since we have been going through the Young Scientist Anatomy & Physiology self-paced class, I have to tell you, I’m impressed! I think Professor Landry is an excellent instructor!
As a parent, I find myself listening in to his lectures because he is so engaging. He presents the material such that learning is enjoyable for the students (and parents like me who are learning & relearning along with their kids).
I love how he includes personal stories, fun trivia, and interesting facts while he teaches. One can tell that he is passionate about science and I’m finding that his excitement is rubbing off on me!
Look no further…
So, is science instruction in your homeschool lacking? Don’t want to teach it yourself? Don’t want your child trying to teach themselves science from a textbook? Co-op isn’t an option?
I urge you to check out Greg Landry’s self-paced, online College Prep Science classes! You won’t be disappointed!
