My kids were arguing and I was totally thrilled! No, I’m not kidding! And, no, I’m not crazy either! You see, they were arguing over who got to play on the computer next. No, I’m not talking about playing video games on the computer. They were arguing over a math game!
The former math teacher in me was giddy with excitement! They were all huddled together anxiously awaiting their turn! Now this is what I have longed to see for quite awhile when it comes to math practice!
I received the online math program free of charge for review purposes and was compensated for my time. All opinions expressed in this post are my own and I was not required to post a positive review of the product.
Finding ways to incorporate math practice can be difficult if you are trying to find something beyond the typical flashcards and worksheets. However, I have found that my kids really enjoy games where the math is incorporated into the action of the game. Here are 4 different types of games that include math practice that are, dare I say, fun!
Math Board Games
Make math practice a family affair! Gather everyone together and play a board game! Sneak in some math practice by choosing a game that incorporates math skills.
There are quite a few such board games on the market and I’ve got a number of them in our game closet! Some popular math-related board games include The Allowance Game or Equate. Looking for more board games to secretly slide in some math practice, check out Math Games for Family Game Night.
Get active when practicing math skills! I’ve got four boys and they are busy-bodies! They like to get up and move around! So, why not incorporate math into the action? Our go-to for active, get-me-out-of-this-seat learning are Education Cubes. The boys throw, toss, kick, and even catapult the cubes as they yell out solutions to math facts.
Printable Math Games
Print and play! There are loads of printable math games available on the internet to download for your kids! Games can vary from basic matching to advanced algebraic concepts and more!
Many of the games can be used for independent practice! Check out some of the printable math games I have used with my kids!
Online Math Games
Make math practice interactive! My kids love using electronics. Computer. iPad. Video game console. Tablet. Phone. You name it! If it’s got to be powered up, they enjoy using it! Why not indulge that desire by incorporating math! That is exactly what I did that led to the music-to-my-ears arguing I mentioned earlier!
Said arguing took place just before I snapped the photo above. The kids were trying out our new online math program that features some fun math fact games. They were playing:
Speed Skills ~ race to beat the clock as you solve math facts
Times Tables Shoot ‘Em Up ~ earn points and lives by using a spaceship to shoot at the correct math fact answers
Swap Pieces ~ solve this deceptively fun logic puzzle that I may or may not have tried many, many times
Summer Online Math Learning
I am also using this very online program to help avoid the summer slide! My younger boys use the curriculum portion of the program almost every weekday…without me having to tell them! Gotta love that! Math practice without all the whining and complaining!
Plus, I get bonus mom points because I let the kids play the math games pretty much whenever they want to, outside of their normal electronic use time! Who can say no to kids begging to do math! Definitely not me!
