Teach, reinforce, or practice the concept of multiplying with this fun array multiplication math game! Download and print the FREE game boards today!
Math is more fun when it can be taught or practiced in a game format, which is why I made lots of printable games for my kids when they were younger. Specifically, I tried to make lots of fun math printables to help cement some of the basic math concepts in their minds. Today’s game is all about multiplication. It utilizes the array multiplication method which I have found to be quite helpful for children just learning to multiply!
Materials Needed:
- Two dice labeled with numbers between 1 and 10 (We prefer to use either our Education Cubes or our Write-On Wipe-Off Dice.)
- Dry erase markers
- Grid Multiplication game board (Scroll to download the FREE printable)
Prepare the Game:
Print one grid for each player. Laminate for durability and repeated use. Or, slide the game board into a page protector.
How to Play the Game:
Each player takes turns rolling the dice/cubes and making an array on the grid corresponding to the numbers rolled. The first number rolled is the number of rows to color on the grid. The second number is the number of columns to color on the grid.
After making the array, the player writes the corresponding multiplication equations. The player with the largest product gets a point for winning that round of play. The player with the most points wins the game!
Sample Game in Action (with two players):
Player A rolls 4 and 5, colors the corresponding array and writes the two multiplication equations.
Player B rolls 9 and 4, colors the corresponding array and writes the two multiplication equations.
The players compare their game board and Player B adds a point to their score box because their product is greater.
Erase the boards and continue with more rounds of play. The person with the most points wins!
Optional Game Play:
For younger children, it may be more appropriate to use manipulatives or counters with this game. Rather than using a dry erase marker, puff ball magnets (and a cookie sheet ) can be used to form the array.
The Grid Multiplication Game is a great hands-on way to practice the concept of multiplication. The game can be played with an unlimited number of players! So, grab the whole family (or the entire classroom) and start playing today!
